The Waterville Historical Society collects, preserves, provides access to, interprets and fosters an appreciation of history that has an impact on the Waterville, Ohio and surrounding area.
The theme is the coming of the canal to Waterville 180 years ago with the following characters: (1) Elijah Dodd (1806-1876) a Canal contractor who discusses the importance of the canal in settling Ohio. (2) Lewis Eastwood (1809-1883) An early constable and hotel owner recalls the travails of digging the canal. (3) Jane Shoemaker (1840-1935) who recalls her trip to and from Cincinnati. (4) Chauncey Crego (ca. 1825-1847) a Mexican War solider discusses the importance of the canal to national security. (5) Helen Haskins (1842-1886) Relates the effect of the canal on business (6) Capt. James Marston (1825-1894) Shares the challenges of a canal boat captain. (7) Carrie Ostrander (1856-1922) Recites her memories of operating a canal store (8) Marie Conrad (1889-1983) Recounts the dangers of skating on the canal (9) John G. Isham (1815-1901) Shares the benefits and drawbacks of the canal.
