Veterans Day was created to honor the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 which signaled the end of World War I.” The day used to be known as Armistice Day but Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed it to Veterans Day. It honors all veterans of all wars. There used to be a large sign board with the names of all of the Waterville World War II veterans located in the triangle at Mechanic and the part of the Anthony Wayne trail that was not finished at that time. Remember the “Trail” did not continue past Mechanic Street but Route 24 turned east on Mechanic Street to the River Road and south out of Waterville. Route 24 through Waterville. It was completed in 1950 and the sign was lost at that time. This picture of the sign was donated to us by the Howard Good Family. Today the Anthony Wayne High School has a Wall of Honor in the high school. It honors those veterans from the high school that served in service and also those who graduated from the Monclova, Whitehouse and Waterville schools prior to 1951. Check out the Anthony Wayne School district webpage at http://www.anthonywayneschools.org page and if you have a person to add to the list. Select community and then wall of honor. It is a great way to honor our veterans.
The Village of Whitehouse has recently established a Veterans Memorial Park to honor all veterans and first responders of the Anthony Wayne area and especially those who died in the service to their Country. Thank a veteran today for the freedoms you enjoy.
