Open Houses will be held at our two historic homes, Robbins and Sargent houses on River Road. The Downtown Walking Tour begins at 9:00 at the Robbins House. It will focus on Waterville as a river town prior to the opening of the canal in 1843 and include sites and stories along River Road, Second Street, Farnsworth Road, and South Street. The Uptown Tour begins at 12:00 at Wakeman Hall, 401 Farnsworth Road and will cover the historic businesses, stores, and stories along the Third Street business district which sat along the canal. The Wakeman Archives will be open from 10:00AM-2:00 PM. The 2019 displays at the Wakeman Hall will feature D-Day and will have the front page of the Blade for June 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th of 1944. There are also WWII Army and Navy uniforms located at Wakeman. The downstairs of Robbins House will feature businesses of Waterville with a baseball uniform, Koral t-shirt, pictures and artifacts of the businesses here. There are also binders with pictures and ads from the last hundred years. A new exhibit in the upstairs at the Robbins House is recognizing the contributions of local, national and international efforts to win universal suffrage for women. If you have not stopped by the Women’s Suffrage display at the Robbins House Museum mark your calendar for this Saturday, May 18. Come upstairs and learn all about the struggles of women here in America to be allowed to work outside the home, to keep any money they earned rather than turning it over to their husbands or fathers. Not only could they not vote, they could not own property, had no right to keep their children in case of divorce, and were not even able to speak in public places! No, this was not Saudi Arabia, it was the United States prior to 1919! Come and view our displays, a timeline of events, biographies of famous suffragettes, and the use of propaganda, both pro and anti-suffrage.
The June 15 Historic Home tour tickets also available here online under Join and Give. You can also buy tickets at the Wakeman Archives any time that we are open.
